I agree that it would be regionally base. Except the 4

conferences may continue to hold to the 2 permanent division format given the WAC's failure when it expanded to 16 full members and implemented the rotating pod method. The fanbases and quite a few of the schools (mainly the original Mountain West schools) were turned off on the idea because rotating made it more confusing to know who is your division in a given year. Also, it made it tougher to develop rivalries beyond the 3 teams in your pod. If fans are complaining about how infrequently teams get to play teams from the other divisions, then they will really complain when their time gets to play a team 2 times every 16 years (8 game conference schedule) or 2 times every 8 years (9 game conference schedule).

Since 3 of the 4 conferences have their divisions based on geographic dividers, then they will continue to do that when they expand to 16. The Pac-12 will probably switch to East (8 expansion schools) - West (original Pac 8 schools) format. So using the Pac-16 as an example for breaking up these super conferences, the West Division will be rebranded as the Pac-8 again and the East Division will be rebranded under some new name. The Big Ten could break up into the original Big Ten and the remaining 6 schools either form their own conference or join another conference (rebirth of the Big 8?). The SEC could split into the SEC (East schools) and SWC 2.0 (West schools). Essentially the conferences would return to the type of regionalization that existed before the 1990s.

The conferences won't be worried about TV contracts because I could see the 4 super conferences join together to gain antitrust exemption so they could have similar media contracts as the NFL. When the super conferences break up, then the smaller conferences will simply continue with this business model because they realize the make more money this way instead of competing against each other.

  Something to consider is the 16-member conferences -- VTHokie2000 03/24/2016 12:36PM
